My BIMA Mentoring Experience – AK Connor, Audible

06 Jan 2020

AK Connor was Senior Marketing and Communications Manager at Digital Detox when she signed up as a mentee on BIMA’s Mentoring Programme, May 2019 cohort. She is now Senior Brand Manager at Audible.

Why did you decide to sign up to BIMA’s Mentoring Programme?

I had returned to the UK from Stockholm in September 2018 and was looking to expand and update my network in London. A mentor had been on my professional wishlist for a while, but I hadn’t found anyone suitable, and frankly, I didn’t know how to go about finding one. BIMA’s offer of joining the mentoring programme came at just the right time.

Was your mentor what you expected?

I couldn’t have asked for a better mentor than Richard. As a mentee newbie from a non-traditional background, I was lucky to be partnered with an experienced mentor and champion of diversity. At our first session, he gave me a set of key questions to think on and answer, and those answers then informed the subsequent sessions.

Like me, he’s direct and all about getting things done, and I found the clarity and focus of our sessions refreshing. He helped me see the bigger picture and not get bogged down in detail, and I always left our breakfast sessions feeling motivated and distinctly buoyant. His advice has been invaluable as well as super practical – I’ve told him that he should write a book!

Do you have any advice for someone considering BIMA’s Mentoring Programme?

There’s really no reason not to do it.

I’ve gained someone who believes and champions me at every turn, who shares his network and advice. Everyone should have that.
The quality of mentors you get through BIMA is hard to rival, as is the opportunity to get outside your own network – I was matched with one of the most senior marketers in the UK. It’s such a great opportunity to learn, develop and get another perspective on your career.

And what is next for you?

I didn’t set out with this aim but the mentoring programme gave me the confidence and the tools to make the most of opportunities presented to me. So, when Audible called looking for a Senior Brand Manager, I was ready. Having a cheerleader like Richard in my corner has really made a difference. I’m thrilled that he’s agreed to continue as my mentor after the official BIMA programme ends.

BIMA Mentoring are currently looking for both Mentors and Mentees to take part in the next cohort which starts in February 2022.
