Students explore digital innovation at BIMA Digital Day

On Tuesday 14th November we partnered up with Bournemouth School for Girls for the 6th annual Digital Day.

Digital Day is a free initiative that our founder and Chief Strategy Officer Andrew Henning initiated in association with BIMA, the British Interactive Media Association. The aim of the day is to connect schools and digital agencies to give students an insight into the breath of careers and opportunities available in the digital industry.

This year students faced challenges set by LV=, The Diana Award, and BIMA. LV= challenged students to create an innovative digital product for their pet insurance customers that would benefit pet owners. The Diana Award asked students to come up with a product or idea that could help to prevent bullying or aid classroom learning using either Artificial Intelligence, Virtual Reality or Robotics. BIMA set the final challenge; tasking students to design wearable technology for the fashion or beauty industries, both of which are making use of enhancements in technology at a rapid rate. Their designs needed to help solve a problem that the students, or their friends and family face in every day life.

Danielle Dwyer – Marketing Assistant, apprenticeship alumni, and BIMA 100 2017 Digital ambassador, was joined on the day by our current apprentices who work in disciplines including project management, quality analysis, client services and support. Before getting started with the challenges, Danielle spoke with the students about the vast number of career opportunities in the digital sector as well as how advancements in technology were leading to improvements in the lives of people all over the world. Throughout the day our goal was to push the students to think outside the box and come up with outstanding ideas for the challenge, as well as pique their interest in exploring digital career prospects further.

Having previously worked with the school on Digital Day, Danielle speaks about her experience this year, “Redweb is very passionate about inspiring students to consider career opportunities within digital. The girls had some really innovative ideas and we’re hopeful that they will do really well in the competition”.

At the end of the day, students pitched their ideas to our team in a style mirroring ‘Dragons Den’. Following all pitches, and with the help of the school’s Deputy Head of Design and Technology James Winrow, we selected the best ideas which are to be judged by BIMA and their sponsors. The prizes for this year’s winners include a cash prize for the winning schools, a Sky Academy experience, and cinema tickets. We wish the girls the best of luck and look forward to finding out the winners soon!
