Girl Geek Bootcamp in Liverpool: Week 6

07 Jul 2016

“The future of tech is female” is what Shaun McInerney, Principal of the studio school said at the celebratory event on Tuesday. The ten girls and their families were invited to Constellations where they received awards for their efforts during the last 6 weeks at the first every Girl Geek Bootcamp!

Industry partners gathered including leading digital agencies Amaze, Mando and Rippleffect who are giving the girls one day placements during the summer.

Over the last 6 weeks we’ve blogged about the journey of the bootcamp, something that was needed in the North for girls at this age who are due to pick their options at school. The course started with a confidence building session which involved Hula Hooping and public speaking mentoring then went on to showcase some of the female role models here in the city. Session 3 was then a play session where the girls got hands on with 3D printing, Laser cutting and VR. Coding was next with a basic introduction to Scratch and Python led by Studio School students. Session 5 we saw four agencies stay open a little later to welcome the girls into the offices to see what a real digital and creative space looked like.

Chelsea, bootcamp organiser said “None of us had this opportunity growing up, especially at the age of 12-14. We’ve seen these girls grow substantially in confidence and have gained a friendship group with common interests. I don’t think we’ve seen the last of them!”

The event was supported by SKY who have recently moved their headquarters to Leeds and have plans to support diversity in the North.

Liverpool Girl Geeks plan to run more bootcamps and hope to see other towns and cities run them too. They’re also planning a girl geek academy and have events for anybody from the age of 5+.
