That’s the question we tackled in the latest podcast episode of Is This AI?, hosted by BIMA AI Council Co-Chairs Olly Veysey and Lisa Talia Moretti, with guest Emily Lawes, a Lead UX Designer specialising in accessibility.
Emily shared her experience testing Figma Sites, a tool that lets you spin up websites fast. While impressive on the surface, the outputs quickly fell apart under accessibility checks – screen readers returned nonsense and fixes often created new problems. Her verdict? Fast doesn’t count if the result isn’t usable or inclusive.
The discussion highlighted a broader risk: when we rely too heavily on AI, we risk losing craft and rigour. Writers may skip fact-checking, developers may stop reviewing code and designers may bypass discovery and testing.
So can AI be both fast and good? The consensus was yes but only if humans stay firmly in the loop. Transparency about what tools can (and can’t) do, alongside strong accessibility practices, ensures AI supports rather than undermines quality.
As Lisa put it: “Tools and knowledge together are what make you faster and good.”
