By introducing capacity tracking to the app, we’ve changed how drivers and passengers interact with travel, while helping them feel safe during journeys.
This update was done in direct response to the pandemic and delivered in just 4 weeks. The UK-first update shows the live location, seating, and wheelchair capacity of each vehicle. It directly addresses concerns around drivers’ safety, notifying them if a bus is in danger of overcrowding. This was crucial for the safety of the public and was delivered when we needed it most: as lockdowns started to ease and public transport use started to increase.
However, this update changes how we interact with travel beyond the pandemic. It unlocks new opportunities for travel self-service, accessibility, and repurposing technology to deliver solutions in a more rapid, agile way. Furthermore, this update has changed the core purpose of the First Bus app, becoming its key differentiator and linking together all the features of the app.
