 Challenge

White elephant is the moniker given to an impractical gift that cannot be easily disposed of by the recipient. Sometimes these gifts survive for decades hidden in the back of cupboards or locked away in the loft. Unloved and unused. In the UK in 2019, 114 million gifts were unwanted but only 14 million were regifted – meaning in the UK alone,100 million unwanted gifts every year are being hidden in cupboards and lofts. Platforms such as Ebay, Gumtree, ReGifted and Preloved have dedicated sections for unwanted gifts, however these sites require you to offer your gift at a price for others to bid on. Selling the item may leave feelings of guilt considering the time, thought and money that went into purchasing that original gift.

 Solution

White Elephant – a guilt-free gift exchange mobile app, turning unwanted gifts into treasured possessions. Upload unwanted gifts, browse other white elephants, agree to swap gifts or make a donation.

No ‘£’ signs – Here at White Elephant we value the time, thought and money that went into purchasing that original gift – even though it wasn’t quite right for you. We don’t want to lose that. That’s why White Elephant gifts aren’t resold – just swapped or acquired through a charitable donation.

100% goes to charity – 100% of any donation is kept by the selected charitable organisation. We only make money by advertising to like-minded brands who advertise their products based on your gift search.

Sustainability – As you unpack your newly acquired gift – you’ve potentially saved that item from going into landfill (or spending a decade in the loft before being thrown out). So you are positively contributing to a greener, circular economy.
