It was a busy morning as we held our first BIMA Breakfast Briefing of the year, ‘Responsible AI: How Do We Build Systems that Don’t Discriminate?”, in partnership with Microsoft as part of our Age of Ai series. It was also our first ever Breakfast Briefing at The Curtain Hotel, and it proved an intimate setting for the BIMA Community to learn from some real experts on the topic.

Catriona Campbell, EMEIA wavespace Leader at EY Seren chaired the discussion with our panel and helped send out a clear message: “Organisations, in order to build Ai responsibly, need to make sure that the team structure around Ai is correct, that we involve people of lots of different disciplines”. She also noted how the panel identified how to avoid disaster, stating “Phil (Harvey) mentioned the film fight club and how one of the characters was a risk assessment manager, and he highlighted the need to risk assess our Ai platforms, and I find that fascinating.”
Dr Lea Samarji, Intelligent Industry Solutions Offering Lead at Avanade joined us too, highlighting the need to look at the numbers & information diversely and not just the people; “I enjoyed the talk today, especially 2 key elements around team building and having a diverse data set that an Ai platform will be working from. Make sure it is bringing up internal data but also external data that it can use to form a holistic view of the problem it is trying to solve.”
Josie Young, Josie Young, Lead Consultant for Artificial Intelligence at Methods highlighted the need for clarity. “We still aren’t clear what the standards are that we are working to in this area,” she told BIMA, “we need to stop racing to become the leader and collaborate more, see what works and what isn’t working.” Josie also called for everyone to do more with our words; “We also need to be able to translate the principles and the mission statements that we have around this subject into action and really be prepared to invest in trying new things and ideas because old approaches are not going to work going forward; we need to be brave and bold!”
Phil Harvey, Senior Cloud Solution Architect for Data & AI at Microsoft “Empathy is a two-way street, we talk a lot about technical people developing more empathy, but it works in both directions. People in the creative teams and beyond should invest time to learn about the tech more as that is so important.” He also echoed the calls for a broader church of views to be baked into teams from an early stage, saying.“Organisations should look on the inside the same way they observe the outside world they serve and reflect that. That is what Diversity & Inclusion means because you need to have all of the perspectives that you serve in the process of building the tech”
