Digital innovation is having a profound impact on the way people are able to access and communicate new ideas. Online platforms and apps have created new avenues for social engagement and new ways of connecting communities, businesses and people who share a common interest. This movement has gained significant momentum in recent years, and is only growing.
The private sector’s willingness to embrace and adopt new technology is transforming the way they operate and engage with their audiences. But this adoption is not just confined to large corporations – startups and scaling SMEs are equally keen to adopt digital solutions.
However, while it’s positive to see the disruptive force of technology sweeping the private sector, we are yet to see the same innovation really take hold in the third sector. Given the positive role technology has played for organisations of all shapes and sizes, there is immense potential for these same innovations to be used as a means of influencing change in the not for profit space.
To demonstrate how this can be achieved, we (as London-based Studio Graphene) have launched a new initiative called Build My App, which will see us design and develop a not for profit app in just three days completely free of charge.
As a studio – who build awesome blank canvas tech products on the daily – we’re calling for entrants to propose a not for profit app idea that will help bring about positive social change. Judging the applications based on their feasibility and potential impact for good, we’ll then select one app idea and build it for free.
So, what can you do to ensure that your idea is in with a running chance?
Simple. We are encouraging all applicants to think outside of the box and consider how existing technology can be used in new, fun or innovative ways. And don’t forget that the main premise of the app is to promote a function that will have a strong, positive and immediate impact in addressing a particular social issue.
Not only is this a fantastic opportunity to transform a great not for profit idea into a fully-functioning app, Build My App will also show how organisations can effectively harness the power of technology to improve the way they engage with wider society, in a cost-effective manner. Affordable digital solutions can be quickly built to a high standard, and there’s no reason why small organisations should feel they are not able to benefit from exciting new technologies on offer – and we’ll prove it.
With entries closing on Thursday 31st May, be sure to submit your app idea ahead of the deadline. The winning entry will be announced on Tuesday 5th June, with the app being built for free and launched at Apps World Evolution 2018 – the event runs from 12th to 14th June as part of London Tech Week.
