Sustainability Council

Inspiring and guiding the digital industry to deliver work that’s better for clients and the planet.

About the council

The digital work we do has a real impact on the planet – both directly, and through our clients. The BIMA Sustainability Council exists to help our members and the wider industry understand this impact and take positive action that leads to better outcomes for both businesses and the environment.

Our key focus areas

Sustainability is a defining challenge for the digital industry. In previous years, the Sustainability Council has helped raise awareness, build shared understanding, and create opportunities for conversation and learning through industry insight, events, and practical resources for BIMA members which you can access below.

As expectations around sustainability continue to evolve, our focus is now to build on that foundation with clearer guidance and greater impact.

Our mission is to inspire and guide BIMA members and the wider industry to recognise the impact of what we do, navigate the complex sustainability landscape, and deliver work that’s better for our clients and the planet.

Inspiring

BIMA members are shown what meaningful progress looks like through real examples, collective action and visible commitments from across the community. This approach builds confidence, creates momentum and encourages members to take their next step.

Navigating

Clear guidance enables BIMA members to move through complex challenges such as sustainability and Net Zero with greater confidence. Learning, tools and practical frameworks help members understand their impact, prioritise action and create a credible plan forward.

Better work

Better ways of working are promoted for BIMA members that focus on doing good work for the right organisations. This includes embedding responsibility into everyday decisions, choosing who and what to work with, and building healthier, more resilient businesses over the long term.

Technology Impacts

The environmental impact of digital and technology is addressed so BIMA members can reduce footprint and influence better outcomes through client work. Practical guidance supports lower-carbon digital design, build and delivery.

Meet the council

Our council is led by Ben Perkins, Founder at Subvert Studio. Together with members from across BIMA, they work to inspire progress, guide best practice, and help agencies deliver work that creates value for clients while reducing impact on the planet.

Ben is passionate about sustainability and believes that businesses shouldn't have to choose between growth and purpose. The greatest impact businesses can have, after making things in a sustainable way, is helping people make and stick with more sustainable choices.
